Every year hundreds of university and college coaches go searching for a new group of talented softball players to recruit. And every year, these schools award millions in sports scholarships . Many players will sit by their phones, waiting for college coaches to call. And for most talented players who sit and wait, the call will never come. They learn quickly that, although they are solid ball players, recruitment is not automatic.
All of these softball pitching drills improve speed and control/direction.
Let’s face it, there is nothing like flat out speed that will make a difference in a game or any competition. We have all seen it; games are won and lost because of some player’s quickness and speed. Even a player’s athletic career will be affected by how fast she is.
Last Hitter Standing
This is a great competitive drill for your whole softball team. Each batter gets one ball from the machine. She has to hit a ground ball or line drive to stay in the game. If she hits a fly out, fouls it off, or completely misses she is out and has to run (or do abs or pushups, depends on what kind of conditioning you want to do) until there is 1 batter left.
BARNEY BOP The final thing we do at every softball practice is to have a game that teaches a skill. Here is of my very favorites and a favorite of my players.
